Reasons Why There Should Be Free Lunches

Some parents today do not take care of their children like they should. So when parents put other priorities before their kids, the kids are the ones who suffer. Sometimes parents don't pay attention if their child left home without breakfast, or if they even had packed a lunch or not. So when the child gets to school, they are hungry and aren't focusing on their school work. I think all students should receive a free breakfast and lunch at school because this might be the only place where they receive a good meal to eat.

 

I have been in schools where the students live in poverty. You can tell by the way they dress, their hair not brushed, and the way they act that they aren't receiving the finest care. Sometimes teachers have to act as a parent and take care of the students when they need help, but teachers can't do everything on their own. They need help by making sure these kids have what they need.

 

Some people might think that not all kids need free lunches because they're from a good neighborhood or good family. I think we shouldn't judge a book by its cover. We don't know what kind of situations people are in or problems families are going through. Even if students are from a well to do family, the free lunch program ensure that each student will receive two healthy balanced meals.

 

Even though this is something no one should be ashamed of, asking or applying for free lunches can be embarrassing for students and parents. By having all school meals for free, then the students and parents do not have to be embarrassed for the circumstances they are in. Some parents may work three jobs and still not able to afford food for their families so by doing this, this helps the family save money that might not have the money to spend for food.  

 

Some people my think that it's a waste of money. The tax payers may not want to dish out the money for this, but when you go into a school and you see a kid eating chocolate pudding, cookies, and candy, because they had to pack their own lunch. People don't realize the bad conditions some students live in. Students need healthy meals everyday. So by offering free meals, students will do better in schools because their stomachs won't be distracting them.

 

I think it is crazy that people do not support this. I would think people would not want kids to go to school hungry or have the right food to eat. People should consider what little kids have to go through at home and when they get to school, it should be a place where they feel safe and can have food to eat.
